Become On Honorary Wichitan And Root For The Shockers!

Shocks_SITwo days till my Wichita State Shockers tip off against Louisville and I am continuing my quest to introduce this team to the world from a fan’s perspective.  Yesterday’s article (Who Are The Wichita State Shockers? A Fan’s Perspective) saw a record amount of visits to our site from multiple countries, showing that basketball fans around the world are ready to join the Shockers!  Right now…Wichita is electric.  Every person I run into asks me the same question, “Are you going?”  My response is simple, “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”  There is an unspoken language that every citizen of Shocker Nation and the City of Wichita shares right now and it is communicated in looks, apparel, and fragmented sentences like, “It this amazing or what?”  No need to clarify…we all are thinking the same thing…The Shockers are in the Final Four.  My flight leaves in less than 24 hours.

028030525G_SW_3x5_AM3This week the WSU bookstore ran a promotion where they would discount new Shocker apparel by $3 if you brought in your old KU or K-State shirt to trade and jump on the Wichita State bandwagon.  Every digital billboard in town rotates between marketing messages and two words, “GO SHOCKS!”  Everyone is wearing black and gold, sports apparel shops are sold out, golden flags fly from every house and car, and the airport is gearing up for the mass exodus that will take place tomorrow as thousands of fans make their way to Atlanta.  Busses filled with screaming students leave today, caravans from all over are driving in, and the team is already in Atlanta putting together Gregg Marshall’s game plan.  The stage is set!

Last year I took my father-in-law to Koch Arena and he fell in love with the opening intro that played before the game.  It was one of the best I’ve ever seen and as a Wichita State fan it gave me chills before each game.  It was about our history, about the connection of the team to the city, and what Shocker Basketball means to Wichita.  We thought it was our year to make a deep run in the dance…and so did every sports analyst in the nation.

We had just raised the NIT trophy the year before so we were pumped when we entered the tournament as a 5 seed in 2012!  However, it wasn’t our time.  This is our time.  As I’ve said before, “We have a Marshall as a coach and he doesn’t rebuild…he reloads!”  What was touted as a rebuilding year is now the winningest season in Shocker Basketball and Wichita State stands on the precipice of making history.  We’re calling on you to be an honorary Wichitan and help this team achieve greatness.  Its time to make you an official Wichita State Shocker fan!

hi-res-165113462_crop_exactWe stand for defense.  Literally.  When the game is ready to start get up off your butt, stand, and clap with us.  We don’t sit till the other team makes their first basket though I suspect we’ll be standing and clapping the whole way through.  We “play angry,” which means we bring intensity to the court along with our talent and beat teams no matter what it takes…we refuse to lose.  We have “MTXE,” Mental Toughness – Extra Effort.  We leave it all on the court because you can’t take it with you and there is no sense looking back…we focus solely on the task at hand.  Don’t be surprised that the team doesn’t tweet, email, etc. on social media this weekend…they have work to do and we’ll party on Tuesday when we come home.  They are focused.  Our coach (Gregg Marshall) is intense, but he treats his players with respect and holds them accountable to the abilities they have exhibited.  We were a dangerous team when we were fraught with injuries and we are more dangerous now that we are healthy with the exception of one player (Evan Wessel).  Most dangerous is we are on fire.  En fuego!

This year’s pre-game video and theme for the year is most appropriate, “Ive got my city right behind me.”  Taken from Macklemore‘s song “Can’t Hold Us” we, as a city, have latched on and lived up to our expectations.  We got this team.

Raise those hands, this is our party
We came here to live life like nobody was watching
I got my city right behind me
If I fall, they got me. Learn from that failure gain humility and then we keep marching ourselves

Here we go back, this is the moment
Tonight is the night, we’ll fight till it’s over
So we put our hands up like the ceiling can’t hold us
Like the ceiling can’t hold us
Here we go back, this is the moment
Tonight is the night, we’ll fight till it’s over
So we put our hands up like the ceiling can’t hold us
Like the ceiling can’t hold us

So don some Shocker gold, throw your bracket out the window, and root for the team that has earned the right to be here and will give you everything they’ve got this weekend.  The Shockers can win this whole thing but we have to do our part first and get behind them…all of us.  This is the moment.  We’ll fight till it’s over.  Let’s make the Georgia Dome into our “Roundhouse!”

Go Shocks!
