About 6 weeks before Max was born I stopped shaving and started growing a beard. I didn’t want to be dealing with shaving, stubble, etc. when the little guy got here. Nope, I just wanted to have a nice soft fluffy beard that was low maintenance. They keep your warm in the winter, you don’t have to shave before going to work, and they often save a little lunch for a snack later. Awesome! Sometimes they itch. Mine gets all mountain-man in a hurry and has to be trimmed. Sometimes you just get sick of the feeling of thick hair on your lip…and that was what happened to me yesterday.
It was time for it to go.
What scares me about the beard is that I have been growing beards my whole adult life but there was something very different about this beard…white hairs. The little area around the sides of my mouth that connect my moustache to my chin were straight white. What happened to grey?!!! Skip “Go” and head straight to White Hair Boulevard! You can’t see them now that I have shaved, except my stubble is white, but what will my beard look like next season? Maybe I’ll just grow a moustache? I can grow an awesome twirly moustache!
The fact is, it is one more little piece of the puzzle. One more thing reminding me that I am getting older. I’m not invincible. My health isn’t what it used to be, I get hangovers way to easily, and my priorities have certainly done a 180. So far…my 30’s are very interesting, very rewarding, but very interesting. 30’s are so different from your 20’s, but I think this is the best decade of my life so far. I’m like a fine wine…I’m coming of age.
